Retro Gadgets: iPhone

Back in 2007, Steve Jobs announced to the world that the iPhone would change the mobile phone industry, calling the iPhone an “iPod, a phone and an Internet communicator”. As well as announcing the iPhone he also announced an app store that would allow a user to install small applications that can improve the productivity of their smartphones.

The iPhone has gone through a number of changes over the years with some generations bringing innovations along the way to the smartphone industry.

Camera

The original iPhone only came with a 2-megapixel camera on the back with no flash or a selfie camera. It was not even capable of recording videos. On the other hand, the iPhone X has a dual camera system that are both 12 megapixel, one telephoto and one wide. On the back, it features a quad LED dual tone flash with capabilities of HDR and portrait mode, meanwhile on the front it features a 7-megapixel HDR camera that is capable of recording in 1080p. On the video side, the iPhone X is able to record in 4k at 60 fps and 1080p at 240 fps.

Display

The original iPhone had a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display that offered 165 PPI density with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. The iPhone X offers a 5.8-inch OLED capacitive touchscreen display at a resolution of 1125 x 2436 pixels that offers 458 PPI density. The iPhone X display also packs different features such as HDR10, 3D touch and true tone along with a notch display.

Battery

The battery in the original iPhone offered 250 hours of standby with 8 hours of talk time along with 24 hours of music playback. The iPhone X offers 21 hours of talk time and up to 60 hours of music play with the capabilities of fast wireless charging.

Security and Features

The iPhone 1st generation offered a simple pin to unlock your smartphone. This gave way to touch ID on some iPhones. However, recent generations offer Face ID, which allows users to unlock their smartphone via face recognition. Other features that the iPhone X offers are casting abilities to cast YouTube, Netflix or Apple music onto televisions, Siri, water resistance, stereo speakers and Apple Pay.

Summary

The iPhone has gone through a huge change when compared to the original iPhone. The iPhone of today offers huge amounts of capabilities that are unrecognisable from the original. However, through alterations with each generation the iPhones continue to push the boundaries of the smartphone industry. The innovation in both camera, computing, battery and features has enabled these newer generations to do a lot more with a device that fits in your pocket. However, over recent years other companies are taking over the innovation side that Apple started and have started changing the smartphone industry in experimental ways such as Samsung’s folding phone or new infinity displays.
